What Will I Learn?

@ the Board Table is a highly interactive and experiential program focusing on how to be an effective board member. Through participation in a simulated board meeting, and facilitated discussion, you will gain experience in and an understanding of:

board dynamics - understanding the group decision making process and what leads to good and bad decisions.
'Group think' - the impact of 'like' thinking in a group.
how to influence and lead difficult discussions
your individual leadership style - is this effective for the role of board director?
communication skills to lead change - the art of listening, questioning and ensuring that your voice is heard.
how to position yourself for board appointments.

Program

Day 1

The Role of the Board

Overview of the role of the board

Simulated Board Meeting

The centrepiece of the program is a 1.5 hour simulated board meeting. This experience in board decision making will provide insights for discussion for the rest of the program.

Day 2

Challenges of Group Decision Making

Individual Leadership

Awareness of your style as a leader and maximising your effectiveness as a director

Communication

Developing the skills of listening, questioning, influencing and expressing views effectively

Action Plan

Develop a personal plan to get on a board/ build your boardroom skills.

Presenters

Virginia Hickey BA, LLB, FAICD

Virginia is a governance expert, lawyer and professional company director, with extensive experience in director education. Virginia currently sits on a number of boards including being Chair of TransAdelaide, a Councillor on the National Competition Council and a director of Flinders Ports Pty Ltd and Medical Insurance Group Australia

Anne Skipper AM FAICD

Anne is an expert in leadership development with extensive experience in governance and board education and coaching. She sits on numerous boards including Chair of RDNS Board and Plan International Australia, director Savings and Loans Credit Union and Deputy Chair SA Tourism Co.
